Digital Assets – Social Media, Photos, and Online Accounts – What happens when you’re gone?!?!
By Reneé Leon
Earlier this year I was chatting with a customer while she waited for her oil to be changed. She shared that she was amid a challenging task – a loved one had passed and our customer was trying to manage online accounts. She was struggling to gain access because the passwords weren’t readily available/known. She encouraged me to plan now to save my family from added challenges when I’m gone. I’m sharing this info with you, too, and perhaps we will all get organized this year!
As technology continues to advance, it has become increasingly important to consider what happens to our digital assets after we pass away. End of life digital planning involves taking steps to ensure that our digital presence is properly managed, and our digital assets are passed on to our loved ones. Here are 5 steps for end-of-life digital planning:
1. Take inventory of your digital assets: Make a list of all your digital assets, including online accounts, social media profiles, digital files, and other digital property.
2. Decide what to do with your digital assets: Determine what you want to happen to your digital assets after you pass away. You may want to delete some accounts, transfer ownership of others, or leave instructions for your loved ones.
3. Choose a digital executor: Choose someone you trust to be your digital executor. This person will be responsible for carrying out your wishes for your digital assets after you pass away.
4. Create a digital estate plan: Create a digital estate plan that outlines your wishes for your digital assets. This plan should include instructions for your digital executor, as well as any passwords or login information they may need.
5. Communicate your wishes: Make sure your loved ones know about your digital estate plan and your wishes for your digital assets. This will help ensure that your wishes are carried out after you pass away.
In conclusion, end of life digital planning is an important consideration in today's digital age. By taking these 5 steps, you can ensure that your digital assets are properly managed and passed on to your loved ones according to your wishes. I haven’t yet acted on this list but hope that sharing it will get me closer to action!
