Money Matters!
By Renee Leon
Ya’ll, I must be honest. I am terribly distracted with the looming start of school and the reality of our youngest leaving for college; it’s making newsletter writing a challenge. An “empty nest” sounded SOOOO compelling when the girls were little. Now that we’re HERE, I’m on quite the emotional rollercoaster with so much gratitude, excitement for both our girls, and some trepidation for Edgar and I to have to re-learn “adulting” without our incredibly helpful daughters.
In light of my distraction and the mounting additional expenses that comes with a new school year AND a move to college, I am delighted to share (borrow) MONEY SAVING TIPS read in a newsletter from a local mortgage broker, Dave King.
- Pay cash – Plastic is awfully easy. Cash gets you to think critically about what you’re buying/spending.
- Use a gift card to budget – If you notice you overspend on frequent small purchases (coffee shops, favorite food treats, etc), buy a gift card for how much you can spend and stick to the plan. If you run out, wait until you can refill the card next month!
- Give yourself an allowance – Allow yourself a weekly allowance in order to stay within your budget.
- No late fees – Always pay on time! This will also help your credit score!
- Watch for bank fees – Check your banks and see if you’re being charged extra fees. Ask for those to be waived and/or make necessary changes to avoid those fees.
- Cancel subscriptions – Any app or service you don’t use can be cancelled. Do an audit of your phone or computer to ensure you aren’t accidentally draining your funds!
- Un-store credit card info – The easy pay options are so HELPFUL in making mindless purchases. If you must put effort into an impulse buy, you’re less likely to spend frivolously.
I hope you found value in these tips! I was grateful to not strain my brain during my last few weeks before school begins. If you see Edgar around the shop this month, check in on him. He may be hiding a little bit of “sad” behind his charming smile.

Aurora Rhythms presents a free concert by Salomé Songbird – August 20, 6:30 pm!
Salomé Songbird is, at a glance, a string-band. But among its members - Ariele Macadangdang, Dr. Joy Adams, and Bryan Dubrow - their background spans fiddle tunes to free jazz; and baroque to bebop to bluegrass. As an acoustic trio, Salomé Songbird channels these influences into original songs inspired by mental health, religious trauma, and cartoons.
