Right To Repair
By Renee Leon
Edgar and I got to attend the Ratchet & Wrench Shop Owners training event in Orlando last month and had a fabulously inspiring time. Lots of ideas brewing and improvements are on our mind, though the biggest SURPRISE was learning that our right to repair is at risk! Right to repair is the concept that people should have the right to repair the products they own, and have access to repair information and replacement parts from manufacturers.
I know. Super shocking, and scary for our small business! The following three points are important to you, the consumer:
- 95% of new vehicles sold globally will have wirelessly-transmitted connectivity by 2030. Currently data is sent only to the vehicle manufacturer, who controls who has access and at what cost.
- On average, drivers spend 36% more on repair costs at the dealership than they would at an independent service shop.
- 77% of vehicles are over seven years old. Without right to repair, drivers will be forced to dealerships where costs are higher, taking an estimated $100 billion from drivers’ pockets.
For the automotive industry, we believe people should have the ability to maintain and fix their vehicles at the repair facility, both independent and dealer, of their choice (including their driveway), rather than having to rely solely on the manufacturer or authorized repair shops to do so.
If you feel inclined, you can quickly send a message to your local lawmakers through www.repairact.com. And consider sharing on social media using #righttorepair.
Recent news is owners, Edgar and Renee, attended the 2024 Ratchet & Wrench Management Conference in Orlando, FL. We networked with shop owners from around the country, we took in new ideas, and were reminded of important skills and habits for building and maintaining a positive, happy, and productive team. We are SUPER grateful to have gotten to go and that never could’ve happened without the incredible team we have! Cheers to hiring and appreciating good people!
I know it’s early, but the Toys for Tots “season” starts early this year. We’re accepting new, unwrapped toys in the shop lobby from November 1st until December 5th! We’d love to fill the truck to the brim, if possible
